Hi Mathias, please tell us a bit more about yourself?

My name is Mathias Nieland and I founded Manipūra in December 2020. Food and its functionality have always fascinated me. I studied Nutrition and Home Economics at the University of Applied Sciences in Hamburg, Germany. During my studies, I learned a lot about fermentation and its benefits, and started to make my own ferments at home.

At a yoga retreat in Tulbagh, some years before, I learned about Ayurveda and took specific interest in the in different doshas. Something clicked as it made sense to use foods based on their functionality to balance the body and achieve wellbeing. When I began catering to my specific dosha, I could feel a difference, especially in my energy levels.

This is where the concept of Manipura was developed – combining the health benefits of naturally fermented foods with the principles of Ayurveda.

Tell us more about the Manipūra products

Manipūra produces a Warming (Beetroot & Ginger), Earthy (Carrot, Turnip & Jalapeño) and Cooling (Kale, Apple & Mint) gut health shot. It’s important to us to be authentic and let nature do her thing – that is why the Manipūra gut health shots are naturally wild fermented and only consist of water, vegetables, spices, and salt.

An important fact about gut health is that our gut needs a regular intake of a variety of “good” bacteria strains in order to be happy and healthy. For this reason, we don’t add any probiotic bacteria or starter culture and only use the bacteria that are on the vegetables we use. This way, every batch consists of many different bacteria strains.

Why did you start Manipūra?

I started Manipura because I wanted to improve my gut health without taking medication/capsules. I was looking for a convenient and natural way to consume my daily dose of probiotics, including a wide range of vitamins and minerals. Since lacto-fermentation offers all this only by choosing the right ingredients, this was the way to go. With Manipūra, it only takes a minute a day, but the results are instant and easily recognizable.
