We have this strange obsession with Ice Cream in winter… maybe it’s a reminder of the summer months, maybe it’s just too delicious to give up over the colder months. Either way, we’re excited to feature our dear supplier, Pop Secret. 100% plant-based Ice Cream dreams, loved by both kids and adults alike. Pop Secret was started by sister duo Taryn and Keri. We’ve interviewed Keri to share more about their brand.
Hi Keri, tell us a bit more about yourself?
Growing up surrounded by raw ingredients (always a veggie garden at home, small scale farming) and a philosophy skewed towards nature as our best healer, laid the foundation for a natural approach to everything we do. We decided to create a food company that manifests whole, natural ingredients as the focus. No nasties and nothing you can’t pronounce.
Taryn, my sister, studied food, while I studied marketing – we have brought these complimentary skills together to start and build Pop Secret.
Tell us a bit more about your brand?
We’re food enthusiasts and we’re a very playful pair. We’ve tried to bring that through in all aspects of the business from interesting flavours (oh hey, lemongrass, lime & basil popsicle) and high quality ingredients, to engaging interactions with our customers. The consistent focus throughout has been to let Mother Nature shine through our ice cream. Our ingredients lists are short because they only include our nut milk base and then the whole, natural ingredients used to make each flavour. We often get comments from customers like “oh wow, that tastes like real strawberries” and that’s because it is real fruit. It’s feedback like that which shows we’re achieving what we set out to do.
What do you sell?
We sell ice cream dreams!
Only the creamiest, dreamiest ice cream comes out of our kitchen. There are two formats that these delicious dreams take, the first is the classic ice lolly or popsicle, currently in 7 different flavours and more recently our tubs of creamy gelato either in 150ml or 500ml.
We’ve also got some very exciting things up our sleeve, so watch this space!
Where did you come from and where are you based?
We grew up in KZN, then Knysna and both bolted to the city when we turned 18 to see what the world had to offer. Taryn has travelled extensively, while I’ve put down roots in the Mother City. We’re now both happily settled here.. for now.
Pop Secret is currently based in Vredehoek with plans to expand.
Why did you start Pop Secret?
To create products that are made with only good ingredients, so that even when you’re having something indulgent or convenient, it’s nourishing.
To reframe perceptions around plant based food, showing people that making better choices for animals & the planet doesn’t mean sacrificing taste & flavour or convenience.
To create delicious alternatives for those with intolerances, so that they don’t have to sacrifice beliefs, treats or choices.

From the start we haven’t compromised on our product. We wanted to create the best possible treat with the best possible ingredients, and we’ve worked hard to maintain that integrity since the outset of this journey. We also wanted to make sure that you couldn’t tell that it was plant-based and we think we’ve ticked that box, with even the staunchest sceptics loving our products.
