As the sun starts to set later, rise earlier, and shine a little brighter, we are reminded that summer is just around the corner – the start of a new season giving us the opportunity to shift focus and spend more time outdoors doing what us Cape Townians know how to do best – be free in nature!
At All Things Earthly, we’ve loved bringing you the best in immune health over the winter period and wish to keep your bodies healthy and energised over the summer months. We’re sharing our areas of focus, top tips and favourite products for Supercharging your Summer!
Gut Health
Improving and maintaining gut health has become a major focus in preventative medicine as it is closely linked with immune health, mental health, and many aspects of overall health. Including probiotic and prebiotic foods in the diet can assist with improving and maintaining gut health. Probiotics contain live microorganisms intended to maintain or improve the “good” bacteria in the gut, while prebiotics are found in high-fibre foods and act as food for these microorganisms. Think of including these kinds of foods to your diet to help nourish your gut.

Tip:
Brew a jug of your favourite herbal tea and put it in the fridge to enjoy cold. This helps you stay hydrated, while also contributing to gut health.
Immune Health
Although winter gets all the attention in terms of immune health, it’s important to nourish your immune system all year around. Think of adding foods with bright colours to your diet – tomatoes, carrots, peppers, berries, kiwis, oranges – all high in nutrients to support the body.

Energy
As we approach the end of the year, some may notice a slump in energy levels… luckily, we have the summer sun on our side. The sun is a natural energy-giver. Getting anywhere from 5 – 10 minutes in the sunlight daily is said to increase vitamin D levels in the body, which in turn assists with energy levels, immune health, and bone health. Alongside a moderate amount of safe sun exposure, we also get energy from the nutrients we eat… feeding the body a wide range of organic and free-range meats, seafood, wholegrains, fruit and vegetables daily will ensure the body is getting the required nutrients to stay energised.

Hydration
Since 60% of the body is made up of water, it is very important to stay hydrated. The hot weather may cause the body to sweat more, meaning that we need to drink a little bit more to rehydrate. Staying hydrated also assists the body in terms of gut health, energy, and skin health.
‘Activating’ your water helps make it easier to absorb by the body’s cells. Try adding a stick of cinnamon, slice of lemon, fruit, berries, mint leaves, or chunks of ginger to your water. It is also important to sip water slowly to allow cells to absorb and the water effectively.

Skin Health
While we have mentioned that 5 – 10 minutes of sunlight is beneficial for energy levels, it is important to be safe in the sun and to protect your skin and eyes. The hot summer sun causes skin to dry out, so it is important to hydrate it before, during and after sun exposure. This means drinking water as well as moisturising your skin. Try to apply a good-quality, natural moisturiser every morning and evening. If you are spending the day in the sun, remember to apply sunscreen regularly.

Tip:
Take advantage of the opportunity to wear a beautiful hat outdoors and invest in a good quality pair of sunglasses.
All-in-all, summer is a time to be enjoyed and enjoyment is easily achieved if we’re feeling our best selves. Stay healthy, eat well, love well and be well this summer.
