Hi Peter, please tell us a bit more about yourself
Hi there, my name is Peter Herrmann and I am the co-founder of Harmonic Mycology. I’m an amateur mycologist, citizen scientist and entrepreneur. Born in Paarl, I moved to Noordhoek, Cape Town when I was 20 and have lived here since. Harmonic Mycology was born and is still based in the deep south.
Tell us more about Harmonic Mycology
Harmonic Mycology was co-founded in 2015 as a passion project. Our mission is to produce and supply top-quality medicinal mushroom products, develop mycelial technologies, teach mushroom cultivation workshops, mushroom foraging and host educational events.
We have since been involved in the discovery and cultivation of new indigenous fungal strains and species in South Africa and strive to build a unique culture library of native species for further scientific research, discovery and for the preservation of our local and global myco-diversity.
We started because of our love and curiosity of Mycology as a practice and the potential it holds for facilitating the healing of human and ecological systems. We believe partnering with Fungi is necessary to create healthy living systems and a collaborative, restorative and multi-species future for our planet.
We wanted to use mushrooms for our own personal health, back before there were any good products available in South Africa, so we decided to make our own. We make what we, ourselves, want to take… and from that the mushroom-products division of Harmonic Mycology was born.
Can you explain the products in a bit more detail?
We offer premium mushroom extracts and wholefood powders. Referred to as the Big 5 of Medicinal Mushrooms – Lion’s mane, Reishi, Cordyceps, Chaga and Turkey tail. Our offerings will continue to expand in the years to come. Next up will be craft genetics for those looking for a reliable source of genetics for farming and personal cultivation.
